There are several options for designing and setting up an ecommerce website. The two we most commonly deal with are Shopify and WordPress with the WooCommerce plugin:
Shopify – a standalone ecommerce platform, we can create a bespoke design for your Shopify store so you aren’t locked into one of their boring themes. Shopify is an easy solution for handling stock, payments etc.
WooCommerce – this is a plugin for WordPress that extends the content platform to become a fully fledged ecommerce store and has much of the same functionality as Shopify.
We tend to recommend WooCommerce because we think it has several advantages over Shopify (and WooCommerce powers more online stores that Shopify does). Read more on our ecommerce page.
WordPress is the largest and most widely recognised content management system (CMS) platform for making websites. Used by start-ups all the way to Fortune companies, WordPress can be developed for any sized business or organisation. WordPress is fantastic for many reasons, but one is that it is highly adaptable to most website applications, and custom development means we can create whatever you can dream.
We think WooCommerce is better than Shopify for most of our clients, because its cheaper to build and run, and because you get the power of WordPress for content creation as well. We still build Shopify sites when it’s a better option.
The answer depends very much upon the website needed and the client. Since all our WordPress websites are bespoke, there is no one size fits all answer to this question. The quickest we have delivered a site was in a single day, though it was a special set of circumstances (not least of which that it was a single page site where the client left all design decisions to us).
To give a rough idea, the average turnaround for one of our sites is 6-12 weeks from the initial website workshop meeting in our Oxford office. The actual time spent on any site is dictated mainly by how complex the site is and the quality of communication with the client.
